acoustic treatment for home studios
acoustic treatment for home studios
Description
Silence is golden, or at least pretty expensive. Commercial recording studios cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to build because they must allow absolutely no sound to enter from a usually noisy urban environment. Double and triple walls, isolated concrete slabs, custom steel doors are all standard but high priced items used in their construction. A studio's sound is its number one asset and most owners will go to any lengths to get it right.

Luckily, electronic music does not normally require the extreme isolation needed for recording live ensembles. The use of microphones is infrequent enough that it can be scheduled for predictably quiet times, and close mic techniques, (which are usually appropriate for sampling or vocal lines) don't pick up much noise. Given a reasonably quiet, solidly built house to start with, a decent home studio can be created with modest expense and effort ...

You might think that understanding your studio- acoustics is a complicated subject, but it boils down to grasping a few essential principles. Acoustic designer Ethan Winer explains nodes, modes, nulls, and standing waves to help you understand how small room acoustics affect the music you record and mix.
More recording and mixing is being done in very small rooms than ever before. Small-room recordists include not only amateurs and weekend engineers in their home studios but also serious professionals doing critical music projects for major labels ...

CHARLES M. SALTER ASSOCIATES (CSA), located in San Francisco’s financial district with a branch office in San Jose, was founded in 1975 and currently has a staff of over 40 who consult on over 700 projects annually. Our consultants have backgrounds in engineering, architecture, music, speech, theater and telecommunications. This diversity of experience allows our firm to provide clients with tailored services for a wide variety of project types.

CSA has an in-house presentation studio, used to simulate acoustical environments. The presentation studio is often used to help better inform clients, including, condominium developers, The Disney Corporation, Apple Computer Inc., Kaiser Permanente and the Fireman's Fund.

In 1998, CSA authored ACOUSTICS: Architecture, Engineering, the Environment, a book for architects, engineers, facilities managers, specifiers, and other professionals with a need for information on acoustics.

CSA’s subsidiary company, the Audio Forensic Center, specializes in tape enhancement, tape verification and authentication, audibility analysis, and acoustical simulations.

The JHA design team translates the goals of clients, users, architects, and designers into acoustically excellent solutions specific to program and budget. Work begins in the early stages of concept development and planning and is constantly refined through a dynamic design process that combines scientific knowledge and calculation with imagination, experience and skill.
Architectural acoustic design involves many processes, such as determining the volume, shape, proportions, marterials, and finishes of acoustically critical spaces. Applied research, site measurements and analysis of acoustic data, hands-on lab testing of materials and equipmant, and studies with physical and computer models are all part of the creative process. Orchestra pits, orchestra shells, overhead reflector systems, and acoustically adjustable elements are designed. Noise and vibration need to be controlled, and silent heating and air conditioning systems developed. During construction, JHA works closely with engineers and contractors to ensure that acoustic details are integrated onto the building. As the project nears completion, JHA fine-tunes the acoustically adjustable elements and trains users in their operations.
