Description
Originally from a small town in western Pennsylvania, Anson Wright moved to New York City after graduating from Princeton University. In New York he composed and performed original music for acoustic guitar. Since moving to Oregon Anson has turned his focus to jazz, and he has performed throughout the Northwest and beyond. He has worked with Nancy King, Glen Moore, Jay Collins, Ron Steen, and many others. In addition to his jazz playing, his acoustic guitar compositions and his poetry have been set to modern dance. From 1987 to 1995 he was on the music faculty of Pacific University where he taught jazz improvisation and jazz history, as well as teaching guitar. He is currently teaching in the Portland area.

Anson Wright is one of the small number of jazz artists who have received critical acclaim as writers as well as musicians. Author Anais Nin praised the writing in his novel, Jericho, calling it "bottom of the sea level." The National Endowment for the Arts provided the funding for his second book, Openings. Anson's first full-length poetry book, Sandstone Monastery, was released in December of 2004 ...

Norman Brown has a lot to live up to.
Since the release of his critically acclaimed 2002 album, Just Chillin' - which won a Grammy® in the prestigious Best Pop Instrumental Category - this innovative and original guitarist has been front and center in the fast evolving fusion of pop, R&B and jazz that has captured the imagination of true music aficionados across the country and around the world.

Now, with the release of West Coast Coolin', Norman Brown consolidates his reputation as a premier recording and performing artist with a collection of ten tracks -- written and co-written by the artist - that take the sonic adventure of Just Chillin' into breathtaking new spheres. It's an innovation due in large part to Brown's exceptional skills as a distinctive urban vocalist, with the specially selected tracks of West Coast Coolin' providing the perfect vehicle for this dazzling new facet of his career. As a result, Norman Brown joins a very select list of versatile urban artists gifted as both instrumentalists and vocalists.

"My fans kept asking me to do more singing," explains Brown on the impetus and inspiration behind West Coast Coolin'. "At the same time I wanted to go further into some of the great Soul and R&B sounds that have been such a tremendous influence on me. I tried to bring those two goals together on this new album." Assisting in the process was a top flight team of producers, including Paul Brown, the man behind the boards for both Just Chillin' and its predecessor, 2000's Celebration, as well as the accomplished R&B and Urban Contemporary producers James Poyser and Viktor Dupliax (known for their work with Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, D'Angelo and Macy Grey), who likewise had a hand in the magic of Just Chillin'.

The result is a dazzling collection of consummately crafted tracks that showcase both Brown's urban vocals skills on such tracks as "I Might," "Angel" and "Come Over" and his richly nuanced guitar styling on key cuts like "Up N At Em," "Let Play " and "Right Now." Simply put, West Coast Coolin' delivers on all the promise of this extraordinary artist...and then some.

All which should come as no surprise to savvy music fans. Over the course of five landmark releases and a virtually constant itinerary of international touring, this gifted and gloriously versatile guitarist and vocalist has established himself as one of a handful of preeminent instrumentalists and composers in contemporary musical realms, setting a standard for virtuosity that has placed the Shreveport, La. native in a category of one ...

Martin Barre - anatomy of a guitar player. Guitarist with Jethro Tull for over 30 years.
was born in Birmingham, England on the 17th of November, 1946. My Grandfather had been a violinist in his own orchestra in Paris and, although my Father wanted to play Clarinet, he became an engineer. He never lost interest in music and as soon as I bought my first guitar he gave me albums by Barney Kessel, Jim Smith and Wes Montgomery hoping to broaden my horizons!

My schooling progressed from Kings Norton Grammer, to Tudor Grange Grammer, then onto Lanchester Polytech, later to become Coventry University.

The music scene in the mid 1960’s was big enough to provide most bands with as many gigs as they could handle - more than was wise for someone in full time education!!

In 1966 I took the plunge and moved to London with a friend, Chris, who had played Saxophone in our band “The Moonrakers”. We had been promised work in the band led by Screaming Lord Sutch, (Ritchie Blackmore was once a member), but we were let down.

Work was scarce but we finally landed a gig with a Bogner Regis based band, “Motivation”, who had backed Beau Brummel. The catch was we both had to play Sax. I bought a Tenor Sax on Friday and spent the weekend practising and auditioned on the Monday. Luckily my flute playing from school helped me bluff my way through.

The band became a Blues band in 1968, after metamorphizing through Soul, R&B and Pop. We backed visiting soul artists such as the Coasters, the Drifters and Lee Dorsey. We even recorded a single “Lady Godiva”, for Liberty Records, written by their in-house songwriter who always seemed to be glued to the piano. His name was -- Elton John!

We shared a house with a bunch of mad Scotsmen - a band called Hopscotch . They would later become the Average White Band, and Alan Gorey sang and played bass on a track with us.

We all played up in Dundee on New Year’s Eve with Pink Floyd, featuring the new guy, Dave Gilmour. (That was one crazy night!!)

The Motivations now became Gethsemane and ended up playing blues clubs all over England. I was happy being back on guitar and also playing lots of flute.

I had heard stories of Jethro Tull, The flute player that looked like a tramp, a great Bluesy Guitar player and their reputation was growing fast ...
