Custom Barker Vertical upright Bass with premium woods and passive electronics- Play It Straight.
Barker Vertical Bass - New patent pending by Barker Musical Instruments.
Playing bass in two groups means at least five hours of playing per week. I'm thankful I have that opportunity.
But in the summer of 2002 my wrists began to hurt after only an hour or so of playing. Noting the bent aspect of both wrists as I played my horizontal bass, I began to imagine an upright fretted bass and how my hand positions would be different as I played it.
I couldn't find such an instrument to suit me, so I built one.
Itís called "The Secretary" because I had a little nameplate in a drawer in the shop. And the nameplate fit perfectly on the headstock from the "donor bass".
It was a fun project. People noticed the instrument and commented. I noticed my wrists--they were no longer telling me I should give up bass playing.
After fellow musicians repeatedly told me how good "The Secretary" sounded, I made another instrument...and another....and each sounded better than the last.
Even the first serial numbered BVBs vary from one to the next as the inveterate tinkerer in me has fiddled with components, varied pickup layout and tried different wood and core combinations, always seeking perfection in sound, playability and feel. By the time #30 was built I was content with evenness of tone, the low end growl, and the overall playability of the Barker Bass.
Prior to founding the eponymous instrument company, I owned and operated Great Ned! Woodworks for 22 years. As a custom woodworker and commercial cabinetmaker I enjoyed a reputation as a careful craftsman, a creative problem solver and a community minded businessman. And, in my off hours, bassplayer in the Dry Canyon Philharmonhick.
In that group as well as a local Praise Team, I Play It Straight with a Barker Bass ...

Everett Guitars are among the finest handmade acoustic guitars in America. Built by hand, untouched by compromise.
Kent "Carlos" Everett began his love of building guitars in 1977, and has had a guitar in the works ever since.
He is primarily self-taught. "I have learned a lot from many different people. Does that mean I am self-taught? The two people who have influenced me the most are: Devon Bogue for teaching me the meaning of craftsmanship; and Wade Lowe for teaching me that it is OK to be passionate about your work."
During the 1980's, Everett worked for and later owned the premier repair shop in Atlanta: the Atlanta Guitar Works. After the 50 hour week of repair and restoration, Kent still found evening and weekend time to follow his passion for building. "My goal was to reach a point where I could actually build guitars during the daytime." Building approximately 10 instruments annually, he built a variety of archtop, semi-hollow, solid-body electrics, acoustics, Dobros, mandolins, and in 1988 received a patent for his popular electric guitar design.
Toward the end of the 1980's, Kent began building more and more and repairing less and less. In 1990 he closed the Guitar Works and opened Everett Guitars, a one man shop dedicated to building high-end acoustic guitars ...
Robert Girdis began his studies in guitar construction in 1978 at the Northwest School of Instrument Design in Seattle. After his first year of an intensive studies apprenticeship, Girdis stayed on a second year as a teaching assistant. In the spring of 1981, he established his own workshop on Guemes Island, Washington, sharing a large woodshop with a boatbuilder. On Guemes Island, Girdis was offered glimpses into the studios and work of several talented artists and craftsmen, and was inspired to seek part time work with a few of them to learn their ways ...
Commissions for steel string guitars brought further focus to his work, and he hunkered down to fill his orders. Frets Magazine featured photos of his work in articles spotlighting the artistic side of the craft. BIG sound and careful attention to detail, combined with a willingness to try new ideas, an understanding of the nuances of design and construction that can tailor a guitar towards specific styles of playing and to the individual, has brought Girdis a long list of ecstatic customers ordering custom guitars.
