bonga kwenda
bonga kwenda
Description
Bonga Kwenda is considered a superstar throughout Europa and Africa, though he is still somewhat unknown in the United States. He has recorded 17 albums in a 28-year career, and has been the subject of at least four compilations and countless re-issues. He is also the subject of a biography, "Dendém de Aucar", and several films and videos.

Bonga's life is inextricably linked to N'Gola's struggle for freedom from colonial domination and the continuing struggle for a stable, comfortable, post-colonial existance. In this regard, his career bears a striking parallel to that of Thomas Mapfumo from Zimbabwe.

Bonga Kwenda was born Barceló de Carvalho in Dandé, N'Gola, in 1942. He first came to prominence as an athlete initially as a world-class 400 meter champion who set a record he held for ten years, and later as a star on the great Benfica (Lisbőa) fűtbol team of the 1960s.

Portugal was then ruled by the repressive right-wing Salazar government. Like the regime of Generalissimo Francisco Franco in Espana, it was a Nazi-allied government which managed to remain in power in Western Europa well into the 1970s without much fanfare in the United States.

N'Golans were restricted in every manner possible, including travel. They were also generally denied Portuguese citizenship. Bonga's status as star athlete allowed him freedom of movement, which he used to carry messages between exiled freedom fighters and compatriots still in N'Gola. As the movement for independence heated up, Bonga was forced into exile himself, first in Rotterdam, then in Paris. It was in Rotterdam in 1972 that he recorded his first record, "Angola '72", and adapted the name Bonga Kwenda ...

The first release of new Bonga Kwenda material in the US since 1991.
A multi-leveled lyricist and social critic with a "scratchy, soulful voice." Music includes rhythms from the Congo, Kilapanga, Cabo Verde, Brasil and (the Portuguese) Sodade.

"Cheza" (pronounced like "ch" is choose and "ez" in fez) is a Swahili word that means "to dance, to play." Cheza's music has been described as Afro-pop, "garage-soukous", and folk-African fusion.
Cheza was formed in 1993 by singer-guitar player Paul Weber. Paul lived briefly in Senegal, west Africa where his interest in African music began. The search for others who shared his love of African styles led to the formation of Cheza. Band members include: Phil Bova (drums), Pat Giunta (guitar and vocals), Rob Graves (percussion), Stella Haybukhai (vocals), Neema Mugala (vocals), and Stuart Watkins (bass).

The music of Cheza is a blend of African styles with rock and folk influences -- a new-world hybrid. The result is a collection of songs with strong choral harmonies and fluid inter-playing guitars, all unified by an irresistible dance beat. Song themes range from strong statements of the human spirit to Canadian history to hot spices. Lyrics are sung in English, French, Xhosa, Portuguese, Zulu and Swahili ...

Baki da Fari was formed as a quartet in 1997 in Linköping (the 5th biggest city of Sweden) but it all started off as a duo

many years before. Sly Agouda came to Sweden in the end of the eighties from Togo in West Africa and Hasse Forsberg

was already an established musician in place when they met and pretty soon began to create music together.

Hasse’s been working with lots of musicians during the years. Two of them are Bo Ekberger and Peter Bruun, also living

in Linköping, so the final constellation was quite naturally formed.

At the birth of the quartet there was some internal discussion whether Peter would perform drum set or percussion. The

solution came to fit the band perfectly – Peter basically plays congas and djembe while a drum machine is given the part

of a laid-back drummer who concentrates on bass drum and hi-hat to leave space for the "alive" performance.

Baki da Fari means "black and white" in the west-african language hausa which is used a lot in their music. The lyrics
are written by Sly and deals somewhat with the social and political situation in Africa but also with more lightweight

subjects.

Most of the music is written within the band and mainly by Hasse but the musical interpretation by everyone is of great
importance.

Swedish/African afro band. Biography, audio, and links.
