To make a distinctive guitar! One that looks good and more importantly plays and sounds great. A unique guitar that is hand made using quality hardware, great pickups and good tone wood. A guitar that gets better with age. Most of all a guitar that is affordable to everyone who wants to own and play a great guitar!
Profile:
I built my first guitar in 1986. I didn't have the money to buy a good guitar but that's what I wanted so I improvised and made one for myself. The project worked out well and I got just what I was looking for along with something I wasn't expecting. I wasn't expecting to become addicted to building guitars.
I began to build and re-build all kinds of guitars. I tried everything from using different woods and scale lengths to custom electronics and finishes. At one point I even had a guitar with over 100 different pickup switching options. I learned a lot about what makes a good guitar and how to go about building one.
After building more guitars than I knew what to do with for myself, I realized that the guitars that I was building were playing just as well and sounding better than the expensive "name brand" guitars my friends were playing. More importantly, I was building them for a lot less money than they were paying for theirs!
Wilkat Guitars was created by self-taught luthier and guitarist Bill Wilkat. Having started playing guitar and bass at the age of 12, Bill found that changing playing styles and evolving as a guitarist left him dissatisfied with many of the commercially available instruments. Inspired by the accomplishments of industry pioneers such as Leo Fender (see notes below), Bill realized and felt that more could be done. Minor innovations can make a world of difference to a musical instrument and to the musician's enjoyment of playing, thus providing greater inspiration. Among his goals was to design and create custom built instruments that were unique and yet affordable. Instruments built for musicians, by musicians, with passion, and care, and with the desire to always seek something better. Check out the special features on Wilkat Guitars, like the neck-to-body joint with it's palm-fit contoured heel -- it feels like your playing a neck-through-body style guitar, adding comfort, and great looks too!
Bill's career began in architecture, and after almost 10 years he found that designing buildings lacked the challenges and personal fulfillment he needed. He then turned his talents to mechanical design which he did successfully for 22 years. His education included electrical engineering, mechanical design, computers, and of course the art of lutherie, which he learned in his spare time. Throughout this time Bill never stopped playing and fiddling with guitars, and in 1997 he continued to further his skills by turning his passion towards building the instruments he loves. Upon the urging of many close friends and fellow musicians, he launched Wilkat Guitars in 2001.
Composite Acoustics( the "C. A." of CA Guitars) was started as a technology company with the mission to create the best sounding, most consistent and durable acoustic guitars ever made. What equipped us with the ability to pursue such an ambitious course? The mastery of a technology which allows us to reproduce the sound characteristics of the finest wood instruments, and an unquenchable appetite to innovate based on the needs and desires of players.
Our initial pursuit as a company was to offer our proprietary technology to existing guitar manufacturers who had the experience and clout to build the next generation of acoustic instruments.
During the early phase of our company's existence, we negotiated with the most prestigious guitar companies in the business. From dozens of experienced members of the manufacturing community we learned that; great tone woods are becoming alarmingly scarce and that the innovation cycle in wood-based guitar manufacturing is limited and slow moving due to the intensive investment in the natural resource and manufacturing equipment. We were told by all the companies we dealt with that the guitars of the future would be made of composite materials. Finally, we learned that if we were to create the guitars of the future, we had to do it ourselves.
To begin our journey as a guitar manufacturer, we consulted experts throughout the guitar industry from large manufacturers to boutique instrument builders. We received the input from studio and live-performance engineers, record producers, and players from all walks of life. We listened ...
