For over fiteen years now, Sylvain Courcelles has been practicing the art of guitar building, and he has also been playing guitar for almost 30 years.
He received formal classical guitar training at the University of Montreal, where he earned a Baccalaureate of Music degree. In his workshop in the north of Montreal, Sylvain individually conceives each instrument individually, but only after much discussion with the player who will ultimately be making music on the instrument.
His customers are involved in all styles of music: Jazz, rock, classical. Clients are from Europe as well as from North America.

I was born in Lincoln, England in 1957 and began playing guitar at the age of fourteen. I later studied architecture, and left college with a degree and a sense of structure and form. A stint as a joiner reinforced my interest in working with wood, originally absorbed as a child in the environment of the family joinery business. Meanwhile constant activity as a musician deepened my understanding of the guitar from a player's perspective.
I began building guitars in 1990, originally building classical guitars. I added steel string acoustics soon after. I have experimented with and refined various design ideas over the years and have arrived at some unique and successful models.
During my time as a guitar maker I have illustrated a book on guitar making, 'Making Master Guitars' by Roy Courtnall (Robert Hale 1993). This has become something of a standard textbook in the field and was a real stepping stone in my own research and building methods. Subsequently I produced illustrations for 'The Art of Violin Making', by Chris Johnson and Roy Courtnall (Robert Hale 1999).

Roger Benedict, namesake and co-founder of the Benedict Guitar Company, studied guitar at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Roger began making guitars in Elizabethtown, NY in 1974, and moved to Minneapolis in 1981 to build guitars for a local manufacturer. Roger was also a luthier instructor at Red Wing (MN) Technical College.
In early 1988, Roger designed and built an electric guitar that featured a semi-hollow spruce body and state-of-the-art electronics. Later that year, he built a version for Jackson Browne, who named the guitar "the Groove Master" in tribute to its unique sound and playability. Roger and his wife Laurel formed the Benedict Guitar Company and began marketing the Groove Master in limited custom editions, adding a semi-hollow bass and the solid-body electric Benelectro to the product line ...
