Beauty and the Beast is the story of a prince who is magically transformed into a hideous beast by an old witch. In order to break the spell, he must learn to love and be loved. Beauty and the Beast has recently moved from the Palace Theatre to the more intimate Lunt-Fontanne, and a recent visit there (my first since the show opened more than five years earlier) found the new venue to be indeed welcoming. Steve Blanchard is effective as the Beast; I wish he (and the director) would explore the depth of this character more: if they did, they'd bring the show closer to The Phantom of the Opera and away from its DisneyWorld roots, which would strengthen the piece considerably.
