Electric Blues Club - Accordion lessons, books, resources and tab.
The Accordion started out it's life as a portable bellows organ named the Handaoline which was improved upon in 1829 and called the akkordion, both instruments were developments of the mouth organ (harmonica) and worked on the principle of air being blown in and sucked out through the reeds by the bellows with notes obtained by pressing buttons. Various adaptions have since been made to the simple bellows system including a hexagonal concertina and substitution of a keyboard for the buttons on the right hand side of the instrument, hence the name piano accordion.
Popular in Folk, Irish, Cajun, R & B & Zydeco music, the Accordion has appeared on many well known recordings including Shakin' Stevens 'Julie', Dusty Springfield's 'How Can I Be Sure' and The Band's 'Rocking Chair' ...

Maintaining The Accordion by Jim Allen: An accordion is usually trouble-free for many years. Most of the fixes it might need are fairly easy for an amateur who has had some experience in building model trains or airplanes, or is handy around the house. Since I first wrote this, I have discovered a new book, "The Ins and Outs of the Accordion" by Thierry Benetoux (see links). It covers the inner workings very well, including reed work ...
The Double Action Diatonic Accordion by Jim Allen: There's a rare type of diatonic accordion which is now being marketed by a company which imports fancy items made in the former Soviet Bloc countries. It has 25 buttons in two rows on the treble side, and another 25 in three rows for the bass. Apparently it's quite popular in Russia.
On this instrument, each button plays a single note, the same for both the push and the pull.
If you can read Russian, there is a good link on Squeezebox 101 (see links) which gives instructions on playing this instrument.
The right hand side is simple in layout but rather convoluted for playing. The notes alternate between rows, and each octave is exactly the opposite of its adjacent octaves ...

It's a fun instrument to play, described subjectively by its adherents as being easier to learn and feeling "more natural" to the hand than piano accordion. It's also a interesting instrument from the point of view of music theory and the evolution of the family of diatonic bellows-driven free-reed instruments ...
