Christmas, 1966
My parents gave me an inexpensive AM radio (with a clock & loud alarm) for Christmas that year. It was not the main gift, and I really don't remember what it was I had hoped to find under the tree. I do remember that the radio had probably the most profound impact on my life of any gift I ever received. I would listen to WLS from Chicago at night as I was supposed to be going to sleep. I would hear these magnificent sounds that were totally new to me (okay, so my life was a bit sheltered in certain areas!), these awesome guitar driven songs by the Yardbirds, the Beatles, the Ventures, and the Rolling Stones. Within a week I knew that somehow, someday, I was going to play guitar. My parents, on the other hand, were quite certain that I should not become a guitarist, and this is illustrated by what happened the following Christmas.
Christmas, 1967
After nearly a solid year of talking about playing guitar, I was sure I would get some kind of guitar for a gift. My parents had alluded to "music" being part of the holiday, and would wink at one another whenever I began my daily tirade. Christmas morning came, and the musical gift turned out to be a rather bizarre little "chord organ." As an adult, I can now appreciate the gesture; I'm sure the cost of that thing put a strain on their very limited budget. But back then, I reacted in true teenager fashion: a graceless, ungrateful display of whining and moaning peppered with pouting and anger. On the "up" side, I did begin learning to play keyboards with it, as well as starting to learn to read music. It also increased my determination to be a guitarist at least tenfold. So for the next 6 months I saved what I could from my allowance, I shoveled snow from neighbors' walks, and I even took a paper route which required me to get up at (gasp!) 5:00 A.M., so that I could buy myself a guitar.
Summer, 1968
At least it looked like a guitar... I'm not really sure that the thing I bought deserved to be called a guitar. This thing was a huge, crude acoustic, and I paid about $25 for it, new. It was spray painted red, with a "simulated" pickguard that was painted on with black spray paint. The frets were the size of wooden matchsticks, and the high E string was .020 gauge. (For you non-guitarists, that is really fat, too fat for any normal human to play!) You could not play a fretted note without discomfort. Up to the 3rd fret the discomfort was minor, at the 4th fret it was significant. Only a burly masochist could actually finger a note at the 5th fret. By the 10th or 11th fret you could literally drop a pencil between the strings and the neck! (I am not exaggerating... this is true!) It was quickly dubbed The Beast. But it was mine, and I began to learn. Within a few weeks I realized that I could not go on with The Beast for long. So I scrimped, continued the paper route, scrounged for "deposit" pop bottles, did whatever I could until I accumulated another $25. This fortune was used to buy a red sparkle electric, with 3 pick-ups, 3 rocker switches, and 4 knobs! Wow. But this one was playable up to about the 15th fret, and I began formal lessons using this marvel of modern technology. By now Jimi Hendrix, Cream, Iron Butterfly, Blue Cheer, and Jefferson Airplane were part of my musical diet, and I could actually imitate a few notes from their songs here and there, thanks to the playability of the red glitter guitar. Gary Moore is acknowledged as one of the finest musicians that the British Isles has ever produced. In a career that dates back to the 1960s, there are few musical genres that he has not turned his adroit musical hand to, and has graced the line-ups ever several notable rock bands, Thin Lizzy, Colosseum II and Skid Row to name but three.
Gary was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, on April 4th 1952. Like many others, he was turned on to rock and roll first through hearing Elvis Presley, and then via The Beatles. Seeing the likes of Jimi Hendrix and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers in his hometown in the mid-60s opened up to him the rich world of The Blues. Hearing the art of the Blues guitar performed by such lauded exponents as Peter Green fired Moore's nascent talent, and it wasn't long before he was being hailed as a teen musical prodigy. Indeed, it was Green himself who helped foster Moore's career, a debt that was repaid handsomely when Gary cut his warm and heartfelt tribute to his mentor, the 'Blues For Greeny' album, released in 1995 ...

Martin Barre - anatomy of a guitar player. Guitarist with Jethro Tull for over 30 years.
was born in Birmingham, England on the 17th of November, 1946. My Grandfather had been a violinist in his own orchestra in Paris and, although my Father wanted to play Clarinet, he became an engineer. He never lost interest in music and as soon as I bought my first guitar he gave me albums by Barney Kessel, Jim Smith and Wes Montgomery hoping to broaden my horizons!
My schooling progressed from Kings Norton Grammer, to Tudor Grange Grammer, then onto Lanchester Polytech, later to become Coventry University.
The music scene in the mid 1960’s was big enough to provide most bands with as many gigs as they could handle - more than was wise for someone in full time education!!
In 1966 I took the plunge and moved to London with a friend, Chris, who had played Saxophone in our band “The Moonrakers”. We had been promised work in the band led by Screaming Lord Sutch, (Ritchie Blackmore was once a member), but we were let down.
Work was scarce but we finally landed a gig with a Bogner Regis based band, “Motivation”, who had backed Beau Brummel. The catch was we both had to play Sax. I bought a Tenor Sax on Friday and spent the weekend practising and auditioned on the Monday. Luckily my flute playing from school helped me bluff my way through.
The band became a Blues band in 1968, after metamorphizing through Soul, R&B and Pop. We backed visiting soul artists such as the Coasters, the Drifters and Lee Dorsey. We even recorded a single “Lady Godiva”, for Liberty Records, written by their in-house songwriter who always seemed to be glued to the piano. His name was -- Elton John!
We shared a house with a bunch of mad Scotsmen - a band called Hopscotch . They would later become the Average White Band, and Alan Gorey sang and played bass on a track with us.
We all played up in Dundee on New Year’s Eve with Pink Floyd, featuring the new guy, Dave Gilmour. (That was one crazy night!!)
The Motivations now became Gethsemane and ended up playing blues clubs all over England. I was happy being back on guitar and also playing lots of flute.
I had heard stories of Jethro Tull, The flute player that looked like a tramp, a great Bluesy Guitar player and their reputation was growing fast ...
