Laurence Parnell, Handcrafted, Hand crafted, Guitars, Mandolins, Bouzoukis and other fretted Instruments.
Welcome to the home of Parnell Guitars. At my workshop in Frome, Somerset, I build a range of instruments, including guitars, mandolins, octave mandolins and bouzoukis, and offer a full, professional repair service for all fretted instruments.
I`ve been making guitars since 1991, when I began three years' study with Mike Hobbs, at the Musical Instrument Technology Department of Merton College in South London. Mike`s calm teaching gave me a good grounding in the techniques of hand building and all manner of repair work. An inspirational meeting with the late Richard Schneider at the Bath Guitar Festival encouraged me to go it alone, and to start exploring my own designs ...
In common with an increasing number of luthiers, I am always on the lookout for viable, sustainable alternatives to the traditional exotic hardwoods like ebony, rosewood and mahogany, and have had particularly good results building with walnut, cherry and other fruitwoods.
Where an instrument listed is still available, I'll include a price, otherwise, new guitars start around £1100, depending on inlay work, cutaways, electronics, etc. Less for mandolins and bouzoukis ...

Simon Ambridge: Classical handmade guitars made in England by Simon Ambridge which owe their inspiration to the instruments of Antonio de Torres, Santos Hernandez and Hermann Hauser 1.
My guitars are constructed and in a controlled, dry atmosphere using only the finest and carefully selected seasoned tonewoods.
I use European spruce for the soundboards and Brazilian or Indian rosewood for the backs and sides, though I personally prefer Brazilian for its superior density and visual beauty. I have also used flamed maple and bird's eye maple as an alternative to the rosewoods which apart from being very beautiful when finished, produces a slightly dryer tone in the completed instrument.
Necks are Honduras mahogany or cedar and the heads are fitted using the traditional 'V' joint. The heads are faced with ebony or Brazilian rosewood and the centre joint is often inlaid with strips of decorative veneers to match the rosette. The head angle to the neck, at 9 degrees, is fairly shallow but combined with a slightly thicker soundboard creates the ideal string tension. Also the fingerboards are adjusted so that the bass side tapers down slightly towards the soundhole. This allows the height of the strings above the soundboard to remain the same at the bridge and contributes to the ease of playing ...
