Sam Kelly, five times "Drummer of the Year", "I started playing back in the early 70’s on a kit that belonged to my brother. Playing was my form of ‘anger management’ back then, but out of that came discipline, creativity and obviously some musical talent. I’d sit down in the basement of our house, thrashing away at the kit taking in the tunes from the old Marble Arch compilation albums that were drifting down through the house as my brother played them on the record player.

My playing career started totally out of the blue. A band called Metre was playing locally to me in Kennington, but their drummer didn’t turn up. Somebody said there was a guy down the road about a quarter of an hour away, so they turned up at my door and I went and played. ………And it started from there.

Within weeks of the gig, I was the drummer with Cymande, a new band formed by ex-members of Metre - Patrick Patterson, Steve Skipio & Mike Rose. Cymande was an 8-piece ’Nyah Rock’ band, the original line-up being Patrick Patterson (guitar), Steve Skipio (bass), Mike Rose (sax). Sam Kelly (drums), Derek Gibbs (sax), Pablo Gonsales (congas), Peter Serreo (tenor sax) and Ray King (vocs). Desmond Atwell and Joey Dee later replaced Serreo and King. "

Although not well known in the UK, Cymande toured and recorded in the States between 1971 – 1974, releasing 3 singles (The Message, Bra and Brothers on the Slide) and 4 Albums (Cymande, Second Time Round, Promised Heights and Arrival). The band may not have been around for long in the 70’s but the Cymande legacy continues with Bra and The Message being sampled by Fugees, De La Soul and others. Cymande tracks have also been featured in the Spike Lee films, Crooklyn and 25th Hour. (Picture: Cymande 1971-2 in Balham before going to the States )

Fast Forward ………………. After Cymande split, Sam settled into the London gig scene with Sox (Chris Cameron, Mick Parker, Gordon Hunt & John Reed), who after a busy time on the pub/club circuit toured with Linda Lewis and Billy Ocean. This was followed by a freelance stint in the 'drum seat' with both Jimmy Lindsay and Desmond Dekker. , Sam then went “rocking” around Europe with Roger Chapman & the Shortlist, Kevin Coyne, Michelle Shocked (pictured above), and many others.

"Just bear with me for a few seconds as I reminisce over some of the names I have worked with during the past years (How many names can you run through in a few seconds?) .................... Liz McComb, Sista Monica, Eddie Floyd, Big Joe Duskin, Johnny Mars, Screaming J Hawkins, Dr John, Diz Watson, Chaka Khan, Zoot Money, Precious Wilson, Fred James, Ben E. King, Eddie Floyd & Dorothy Moore, Lefty Diz, Mojo Bruford, Charlie Sayle, Plaz Johnson, The Butler Twins, Deacon Jones & Freddie Hughes, Billy C Farlow, Bill Thomas, Sonny Black & the Dukes, Wolfie Witcher & His Brew, Steve Waller, Hershey & The 12 Bars, The Bop Brothers, Gordon Smith, Shakey Vicks Blues Band, Chuck Farley and Root Jackson & The G.B. Blues Band, to name but a few (Yes, there are others, but I wouldn't like to bore you!)" ...

The Official Web Site of Buddy Rich, featuring information about Buddy Rich, as well as shopping, downloads, message boards, links, and business inquiries.

Arguably the greatest jazz drummer of all time, the legendary Buddy Rich exhibited his love for music through the dedication of his life to the art. His was a career that spanned seven decades, beginning when Rich was 18 months old and continuing until his death in 1987. Immensely gifted, Rich could play with remarkable speed and dexterity despite the fact that he never received a formal lesson and refused to practice outside of his performances.

Born Bernard Rich to vaudevillians Robert and Bess Rich on September 30, 1917, the famed drummer was introduced to audiences at a very young age. By 1921, he was a seasoned solo performer with his vaudeville act, "Traps the Drum Wonder." With his natural sense of rhythm, Rich performed regularly on Broadway at the age of four. At the peak of Rich's early career, he was the second-highest paid child entertainer in the world.

Rich's jazz career began in 1937 when he began playing with Joe Marsala at New York's Hickory House. By 1939, he had joined Tommy Dorsey's band, and he later went on to play with such jazz greats as Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Ventura, Louis Armstrong and Gene Krupa. Rich was regularly featured in Jazz at the Philharmonic during the late 1940s. He also appeared in such Hollywood films as Symphony of Swing (1939), Ship Ahoy (1942) and How's About It (1943).

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Rich toured with his own bands and opened two nightclubs, Buddy's Place and Buddy's Place II. Both clubs were regularly filled to capacity by fans of the great master drummer. After opening Buddy's Place II, Rich introduced new tunes with elements of rock into his repertoire, demonstrating his ability to adapt to his audience's changing tastes and establishing himself as a great rock drummer.

Known for his caustic humor, Rich was a favorite on several television talk shows including the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, the Mike Douglas Show, the Dick Cavett Show and the Merv Griffin Show. During these appearances, audiences were entertained by Rich's constant sparring with the hosts and his slights of various pop singers ...

David Oromaner, information, music, photos, bio, equipment, discography.
Known for his versatility, vibrant live energy, and musical malleability, David Oromaner has entered the realm of New York City's in-demand drummers. His diverse background as a musician ranges from live performances, studio sessions and recording dates, to Carnegie-Hall neighborhood clinics, Cabarets, and finally to teaching his craft.

Growing up in the suburbs of Long Island, David was constantly surrounded by music. "My earliest musical memories are of my older cousin Richard playing drums in his basement for hours. There was just something about being surrounded by sound—a raw, primal energy that instantly got me hooked." Adding to the fire was David's musically obsessed older brother, who would blast Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, and Pink Floyd from his boom box, which was set at no less than an "11." In addition to influences seeping in from his bedroom wall, David was also discovering classical and jazz on his own. The objects of his admiration included Basie, Roach, Bonham, Bruford, Peart, and John Williams. The combination of all these influences helped shape David as a drummer, which he became at the early age of eleven, when he inherited his cousin's drums.

However, from ages 10 to 17, David's main instrument was trumpet. David attented Wantagh High School, where he studied theory and jazz improvisation under the tutelage of Rolann Masciarelli. As a senior he was awarded the prestigious' Louis Armstrong Jazz Award.' In addition to trumpet studies, David pursued private drum lessons at the Long Island Drum Center with a great teacher and fusion drummer named Dave Stark. David then went on to pursue both business and music at SUNY Albany, where he studied with percussionist Richard Abagli and jazz drummer Dave Calarco.

After college, David relocated to Atlanta, Georgia. One of the first musicians he met was guitarist Dan Marshall, who had recently opened the doors to his studio in Little Five Points, called 'Levelheads.' David began laying down live,' pre-produced' drum tracks at the studio in order to develop recording techniques and sounds. Eventually, he garnered the attention of various Atlanta based singer/songwriters who needed drum tracks for their LPs and demos ...
