So- beginning with the greeks, during the palmy days of Athen, also institutional music was mostly limited to its vocal expressions. There were three main keys in use, the Dorian (high e down to e), the Phrygian and the Lydian (major) mode, each one of them divided into two diverse chord- settings, comprising one semitone and two whole tones. They also counted one Mixolydian mode, fallowed by some additional, for instance the Hypodorian, Hypophrygian, Hypolydian, and the Hypomixolydian mode. As we are presently looking upon the modern analyzis of chords, foremost as a tool within the jazz and the popular music, the greeks tried to digest their different modes in categories.
