Description
After Neil Young left the Californian folk-rock band Buffalo Springfield in 1968, he slowly established himself as one of the most influential and idiosyncratic singer/songwriters of his generation. Young's body of work ranks second only to Bob Dylan in terms of depth, and he was able to sustain his critical reputation, as well as record sales, for a longer period of time than Dylan, partially because of his willfully perverse work ethic. From the beginning of his solo career in the late '60s until the late '90s, he never stopped writing, recording, and performing; his official catalog only represented a portion of his work, since he kept countless tapes of unreleased songs in his vaults. Just as importantly, Young continually explored new musical territory, from rockabilly and the blues to electronic music. But these stylistic exercises only gained depth when compared to his two primary styles: gentle folk and country-rock, and crushingly loud electric guitar rock, which he frequently recorded with the Californian garage band Crazy Horse. Throughout his career, Young alternated between these two extremes, and both proved equally influential; there were just as many simpy singer/songwriters as there were grunge and country-rock bands claiming to be influenced by Neil Young. Despite his enormous catalog and influence, Young continued to move forward, writing new songs and exploring new music in his fourth decade as a performing artist. Frank Gambale: guitar player.
Frank began playing guitar at age 7 in Canberra, Australia where he was born and raised. He was influenced by the blues playing of Jimi Hendrix , John Mayall / Eric Clapton, and Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia . In his mid-teens he discovered Steely Dan, The Brecker Brothers and Chick Corea, which pointed him in a jazzy direction. In 1982 at 23 he decided to leave his home to study at the Guitar Institute of Technology (GIT) in Hollywood. He graduated with the highest honor, Student of the Year and was offered a teaching position which he kept for 4 years. During that time he was playing the local jazz club circuit with his own band and already had his first book "Speed Picking" published. In 1986 he signe a 3 album contract with a small label called Legato and began his recording career.
The same year he was recruited by Jean-luc Ponty to tour. Shortly after that tour, he auditioned for Chick Corea and began a 6 year stint which culminated in 5 albums, a Grammy award and two Grammy Nominations. Born in a little log cabin by some railroad tracks on January 20, 1955 to a mother who was a Nun and a father who was a wino, it has been an uphill battle ever since. My growth was stunted at first due to a regular diet of crawdads, water bugs and dirt. In my early teens I went searching for secluded places to learn to play guitar while most of my friends were stealing cars and knocking over Coke machines. Hey, they had their ways of expressing themselves and I had mine. Occasionally I would give in and hang out with my friends but I quickly realized that Juvenile Center and Jail weren't exactly my idea of peaceful secluded places, the ambience wasn’t conducive to art.
By the time I was 15 the Hippie thing was in full swing, which was perfect for me because my second hand clothes and failure to make it to the barbershop were automatically in style. 1970 through 1976 took me through a variety of mostly three-piece Rock n’ Roll bands and some nightclubs where murder, mayhem, mischief, debauchery and record-breaking alcohol and drug consumption were the norm. If I had a dollar for every time I survived a murder attempt, I would have about five bucks ...

Scott Tennant is a founding member of the Grammy®-winning ensemble L.A. Guitar Quartet, and is himself considered to be one of the world’s top classical guitarists.
Mr. Tennant has authored several books and articles on guitar technique, including his best-seller Pumping Nylon, which has attained a “cult” classic status.
