Sonny Jr. Amps: After years of modifying vintage amps, I have located some of the key ingredients for producing this amplifier. One of the main factors in giving vintage amps their truly rich tone is the capacitors in the tonal circuit. I have secured a supply of NOS military-grade paper oil capacitors just for this project. Brands such as Astron, Cornell Dublier, Gudeman, Pyramid.....just like what went into the classic amps of the 1950s. Once the quest for “THE TONE” with tons of power started again, I went through the same rigorous testing process as in the first Sonny Jr.’s, only this time the amp is a step above and beyond for harp and guitar players alike.
As the first harp player to make amps for other harp players, I know how an amp should sound, how it should feel and respond on stage, and how to alter your sound to fit any room. This is something only experience as a performing player can give. I have spent countless hours testing ten inch speakers, and have settled on a blend of alnico Weber P10Q’s [one smooth cone and one ribbed cone], and a pair of large magnet ceramic Eminence speakers for a tidal wave of sound. This triple blending has been something I have experimented with for many years. An amp with four of the exact same speakers just never excited me like getting every aspect of sound and tone possible with the blends. The P10R’s made today just don’t have the bottom end we strive to achieve. They can almost sound brittle as we push so much air through them. For guitar, this amp’s tone and fullness with raw power is everything you would want in a classic style amp ...
