Arguably the greatest jazz drummer of all time, the legendary Buddy Rich exhibited his love for music through the dedication of his life to the art. His was a career that spanned seven decades, beginning when Rich was 18 months old and continuing until his death in 1987. Immensely gifted, Rich could play with remarkable speed and dexterity despite the fact that he never received a formal lesson and refused to practice outside of his performances.
Born Bernard Rich to vaudevillians Robert and Bess Rich on September 30, 1917, the famed drummer was introduced to audiences at a very young age. By 1921, he was a seasoned solo performer with his vaudeville act, "Traps the Drum Wonder." With his natural sense of rhythm, Rich performed regularly on Broadway at the age of four. At the peak of Rich's early career, he was the second-highest paid child entertainer in the world.
Rich's jazz career began in 1937 when he began playing with Joe Marsala at New York's Hickory House. By 1939, he had joined Tommy Dorsey's band, and he later went on to play with such jazz greats as Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Ventura, Louis Armstrong and Gene Krupa. Rich was regularly featured in Jazz at the Philharmonic during the late 1940s. He also appeared in such Hollywood films as Symphony of Swing (1939), Ship Ahoy (1942) and How's About It (1943).
Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Rich toured with his own bands and opened two nightclubs, Buddy's Place and Buddy's Place II. Both clubs were regularly filled to capacity by fans of the great master drummer. After opening Buddy's Place II, Rich introduced new tunes with elements of rock into his repertoire, demonstrating his ability to adapt to his audience's changing tastes and establishing himself as a great rock drummer.
Known for his caustic humor, Rich was a favorite on several television talk shows including the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, the Mike Douglas Show, the Dick Cavett Show and the Merv Griffin Show. During these appearances, audiences were entertained by Rich's constant sparring with the hosts and his slights of various pop singers ...

Roxy Music Drummer Paul Thompson official Home Page - including - Biography, discography ,equipment and influences, plus guestbook.
Paul was born in Newcastle on 13th May 1951 and went to live in Jarrow at the age of six months .He attended West Simonside infants and junior school, "I remember the music lessons in the infants, there were drums ,triangles, bells ,tambourines etc, I always wanted to try the drum, but never got picked , so one day I waited until everyone left the classroom ,I slung the drum over my shoulder and rattled out a tune, thats when I knew I could play !".
"A meccano set, cardboard boxes, and biscuit tins, along with an aptitude for making things, developed into my first drum kit. I used to play along to records,The Beatles,The Stones and the Tornado's,I hadn't yet developed enough mechanical skill to make a bass drum pedal , so I used to stamp on the floor!".
"At the tender age of eleven I persuaded my parents to let me buy a drum, I'd spotted it in a neighbours catalogue, it was called a Kat-Kit, a 14"x3" snare with calf heads and a 10" cymbal on an arm attached to the stand, still no bass drum , still stamping on the floor, but I did manage to join a band " Johnny Blue & The Blue Boys" they were called".
School days :- "sometimes ended up going round to a friends house( Bryan Luke) to play on his old antiquated kit, he did have a bass drum though, and I did learn a lot, playing along to Bobby Elliot and the Hollies ...
Become a Better Drummer - Jamie Kuijpers of Australia holds professional drum clinics to inspire and motivate drummers.
I was born 21st of May, 1971 as James Kuijpers (although I was only EVER called James when I was being told off! - Jamie is what it turned into). I started playing music when I was just 5 years of age, beginning with guitar and throughout my teenage years I performed in cover and original bands and created lots of music (or in some cases noise!!). Whilst at high school I was shown how to play a VERY basic 4/4 beat on a kit and suddenly my desire to play percussion grew and a new hobby was born.
While spending a number of years (13 to be exact!) working in the music retail industry and teaching private guitar students, I found that I began to play more and more kit and less guitar. Then, when I left the retail industry to work with Music Link (Australian distributors for Pearl, Zildjian and loads of other brands), I finally made drums my main instrument and continued to perform regularly in the Adelaide music scene. I have spent the past 5 years working with the worlds leading musical instrument manufactures including, Pearl, Zildjian, Latin Percussion, Remo, and Vic Firth. In that time I have had an amazing opportunity to travel the world, meet and learn from some of today’s finest musicians and business people including Karl Lewis of Savage Garden, Terrepia Richmond of The Whitlams, John Otto of Limp Bizkit, Virgil Donati, Steve Smith, Grant Collins, Dom Famularo, Alejandro Vega, Vic Firth, Debbie Zildjian and Remo Belli ...
