Lines of Reason: Jazz group's website includes pictures, cds, bios, itinerary.
For the entire band, Lines of Reason comes following separate and illustrious careers for bassist Marcus Mclaurine, drummer Allen Nelson, alto saxophonist David Alan Gross and pianist Michael Cochrane. Each of the members of Lines of Reason have been performing under their own direction as band leaders as well as playing with such greats as Max Roach, McCoy Tyner and Hannibal Marvin Peterson. Now, these four friends have finally come into their own with this exciting and creative collaboration. The experience of having worked with some of the great historical band leaders would seem to be a radical departure from the cooperative format of Lines of Reason where each player has an equal input. The opportunity to create, record, and perform among comrades in a close knit, long-term situation has irresistible advantages for these prolific musicians ...

Cyber home of Tom Russell, a singer songwriter whose music is a powerful force in the contemporary folk movement called.

Tom Russell was born in Los Angeles in 1950 and now makes his home on the border in El Paso, Texas. He graduated from the University of California with a Masters Degree in Criminology and taught school for a year in Nigeria, during the Biafran War. He lived in Spain, then relocated to Vancouver, B.C. where he started at the bottom of the music business, playing in the strip bars along Skid Row. He has since lived in Austin, San Francisco, New York, and El Paso-Juarez.

Russell has record eighteen albums of original material—seven on Hightone and five on Rounder-Philo. He's also published two books: a detective novel and a book of songwriting quotes, co-written with Sylvia Tyson called And Then I Wrote: The Songwriter Speaks (Arsenal-Pulp Press: Canada). He has recently appeared twice on "Late Night with David Letterman." His songs appear in the films Songcatcher and Tremors.

Russell's songs have been recorded by Johnny Cash, Doug Sahm, Nanci Griffith, Dave Alvin, Joe Ely, Ian Tyson, Suzy Bogguss, Guy Clark, Sylvia Tyson and others. He is credited, along with Dave Alvin, with establishing the Americana radio format with their co-produced tribute to Merle Haggard: Tulare Dust. This was the longest running number one record on the Americana chart. His song "Outbound Plane," co-written with Nanci Griffith and a hit for Suzy Bogguss, was one of the most performed AM radio songs of the 1990s.

Russell's 1999 release The Man From God Knows Where was termed "one of the most important folk records ever recorded," by John Lomax III. Rolling Stone and UPI writer John Swenson noted: "Russell is one of America's great songwriters ... this record is as close to a Homeric treatment of American history as we're ever likely to see ... when somebody is looking for the equivalent of the Harry Smith Anthology in the middle of the next century The Man From God Knows Where is what they'll discover."

Russell's next release, Hotwalker is part two of an Americana trilogy that began with The Man From God Knows Where.

The Ramones are the first punk rock band. Other bands, such as the Stooges and the New York Dolls, came before them and set the stage and aesthetic for punk, and bands that immediately followed, such as the Sex Pistols, made the latent violence of the music more explicit, but the Ramones crystallized the musical ideals of the genre. By cutting rock & roll down to its bare essentials -- four chords; a simple, catchy melody; and irresistibly inane lyrics -- and speeding up the tempo considerably, the Ramones created something that was rooted in early '60s, pre-Beatles rock & roll and pop but sounded revolutionary. Since their breakthrough was theoretical as well as musical, they comfortably became the leaders of the emerging New York punk rock scene. While their peers such as Patti Smith, Television, Talking Heads, and Richard Hell all were more intellectual and self-consciously artistic than the Ramones, they nevertheless appealed to the same mentality because of the way they turned rock conventions inside out and celebrated kitschy pop culture with stylized stupidity. The band's first four albums set the blueprint for punk, especially American punk and hardcore, for the next two decades. And the Ramones themselves were major figures for the next two decades, playing essentially the same music without changing their style much at all. Although some punk diehards -- including several of their peers -- would have claimed the band's long career wound up undercutting the ideals the band originally stood for, the Ramones always celebrated not just the punk aesthetic, but the music itself ...
