Greetings and welcome to my web site. I'm Ted Hogarth and I play saxophones and clarinets, specializing on baritone saxophone and bass clarinet. My acoustic jazz group, the Ted Hogarth Quartet, performs my original compositions as well as arrangements of the classic jazz repertoire. I'm a member of the Chicago Jazz Ensemble, a busy studio musician, and I have a large private teaching studio. I also direct jazz ensembles and combos at Columbia College Chicago.
It's been my pleasure to perform with some great artists in jazz including, Nick Brignola, Jon Faddis, Charlie Haden, Barrett Deems, Roy Hargrove, Willie Pickens, Von Freeman, Paul Wertico, and Kevin Cole. One of my favorite featured performances was as guest soloist in a Gerry Mulligan tribute concert with the College of DuPage Arts Center Jazz Ensemble. I also performed with the Chicago Civic Symphony in an all Gershwin concert featuring William Warfield. I've recorded with the Chicago Jazz Ensemble, Brian O'Hern, and Michele Thomas.
My debut CD, STEPS TAKEN, reflects my love for different styles of jazz. This recording includes eight jazz standards and five of my favorite original compositions. This recording was inspired by a trip to Havana, Cuba in 1999. I studied with master Cuban musicians at the Nacional de Escuela de Arte and performed with NG la banda, Mezcla, and Bellita y Jazztumbata. I continue to study and perform works by Cuban artists. The spirit of the musicians of Havana is infused into my work and feeds my soul ...
Jazz Saxophonist Joey Berkley's website includes video, audio, photo gallery, flash.
Born in Toronto, Canada and moving to New York in 1978, Joey Berkley has dedicated his life to music as a tenor saxophonist and composer. His intense interest in music began early with the encouragement of his mother who was a jazz singer. The young Joey tried guitar, drums, piano and then clarinet - saxophone took its hold in seventh grade, and over the next several years became the nucleus of his creativity as he began to discover jazz for himself. He received the Roy Smith Memorial Award and the Morris Weinzweig Memorial Award for proficiency in woodwinds before graduating with honors from the music performance program at Humber College, Toronto, Canada. While at Humber Joey was a member of the A Band which toured Europe and performed at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival. In 1980 and 1981 Joey was awarded Canada Council Grants and received funds to study saxophone in New York with Eddie Daniels. Migrating south in the late-seventies, Joey immersed himself in the competitive New York City jazz scene. The musician benefited from his experiences in Manhattan, and maintains that these early years of struggling were not only necessary, but also crucial to his musical development. In fact, his CD that was released in 1999 and marks his debut as the bandleader of the Joey Berkley Quartet, is aptly titled "Made in NYC." The disc, which features many of Joey's original compositions, came out on A-Records ...
Saxophonist Gary Bartz's official website features reviews, sound bites, cds, photo gallery, itinerary, projects, biography.
Grammy Award winning jazz saxophonist Gary Bartz first came to New York In 1958 to attend the Julliard Conservatory of Music. Just 17 years old, Gary couldn't wait to come to the city to play and learn. "It was a very good time for the music in New York, at the end of what had been the be-bop era," says Bartz. "Charlie Parker had passed away three years previously but Miles' group was in its heyday, Monk was down at the Five Spot, and Ornette Coleman was just coming to town. Things were fresh." Back then, Gary could regularly be found drinking Cokes in the all ages "peanut gallery" of Birdland, enjoying a marathon bill of performers. "If I didn't have money to get in. I'd help somebody carry a drum and sneak in," laughs Bartz. "I learned that early on."
Circa mid-'60s, the alto saxophonist - still in his early 20s - began performing throughout the city with the Max Roach/Abbey Lincoln Group and quickly established himself as the most promising alto voice since Cannonball Adderley. "In those days, we used to go by people's lofts and stay for weeks, just working on music," says Gary. "Polks would all chip in and buy food, and one of us would cook. But there was always music, because people were dropping by at all hours. We didn't even think about it; that's just what we did. We were very unselfish about what we were writing because, after all, music doesn't belong to any one person. It belongs to the people, to everybody" ...
