Description
RetroBand is a distortion unit at heart, but this type and concept hasn't been previously available as a digital model. Excuse the use of worn-out terminology, but it goes from warming, sharpening, roughing up, softening and smoothing - or all these combined. It may desirably enrich sterile sound sources. Failing equipment can be easily simulated and this allows plenty of creativity. With some luck, it makes things sound "larger than life". The transient enhanced IM with mid-side stereo control can change or revive a stereo image, too.
RetroBandLite is a free cutdown version of the commercial RetroBand. There are no time or preset usage limitations, but quite many of the advanced features of the full version are missing and RetroBandLite processes everything as mono.

1. bj overdrive
BJ Overdrive is a plug-in that simulates an overdriven amplifier for the PC. Instead of just clipping the input signal, it shapes the signal in a logarithmic manner. The result is a very warm distortion, a bit like an overdriven valve. The author notes that the plug-in is especially useful on guitar samples, but also on breakbeats.

2. dfx geometer
Geometer is a visually oriented waveform geometry plugin. It works by generating some "points" or "landmarks" on the waveform, moving them around and messing them up, and then reassembling the wave from the points. Each of these three stages can be done in a variety of ways, combining to make millions of different effects. However, Geometer has a real-time display of what your settings are doing to the sound, and a prominent built-in help system to explain what each setting does.

Soul Force!: A fairly standard waveshaping distortion plugin, made more interesting through the use of feedback to control the shaping. Can get pretty loud and obnoxious. The GUI was done in Blender, and you can find the .blend file in the source code zip.

Distortionator mk2: A simplistic distortion plugin, with two modes. The first mode is a modified threshold-type distortion (although the modification isn't particularly noticeable, sound-wise). The second mode is called Sine Wave distortion, although it's actually closer to frequency-modulation, as the audio input is used as the index to a sin() function.
