Winner of the JAZZIZ 2000 Reader's Poll for Best New Talent and a favorite of jazz critics since his emergence on the scene in the 1990's, guitarist, composer, arranger, teacher and author, Roni Ben-Hur, releases his fourth and most compelling CD as a leader, SIGNATURE (Reservoir-June 2005), featuring an All-Star cast including John Hicks - piano, Rufus Reid - bass, Leroy Williams - drums and Steve Kroon - percussion.
As its title implies, Ben-Hur's original treatments of such unusually diverse material reveals his evolution and accomplishment as a composer, arranger and leader of strength and substance, whose synthesis of styles and cultural influences defy category. He bravely covers new ground, reinterpreting jazz renditions of the brilliant classical Brazilian composer, Villa-Lobos' Bachianas Brasileiras No. 2 and Choro No. 1. "Villa-Lobos' music evokes strong emotion in me connected to various phases of my life experience. I was finally able to give these emotions a voice, my voice, and tell my story through them." He continues the development of this concept throughout the CD in his passionate reinvention of an obscure Jobim tune, Luiza. Says Roni, "Jobim wrote this gorgeous tune for his daughter, Ana Luiza. My second daughter's name is also Anna Luiza, so it was very easy for me to connect with it. It's a song not often played, but in my mind, one of Jobim's masterpieces."
Roni recalls the lush standard, Time On My Hands, "I've played this song a great deal with my dear friend, and one of my inspirations, pianist Chris Anderson. This arrangement is his and I offer my rendition as a tribute to him and the beauty he's brought this world." Ben-Hur continues, "I, like everyone else, love Harold Arlen, and Blues in the Night represents a sort of bonding song to me. It talks about the pit falls in life, but feels more like sharing one's feelings with a friend, more than a lament." So In Love, the Cole Porter classic, "drew me in from the first time I heard it," says Roni. "Both the words and melody speak to me, and to my feelings for family, friends and a lot in this world." Of his adventurous and compelling originals Roni explains, "Eretz, which means land in Hebrew, is a prayer for peace, something we Jewish people haven't known for much too long, and that the whole world needs desperately ...

Guitarist Rusty Cooley received his first guitar on his 15th birthday and never looked back. Unsatisfied with local Instructors, Rusty began teaching himself through Doug Mark’s Metal Method and various other instructional books and video’s. During High School he took music theory classes and also attended the National Guitar Workshop. Rusty performed solo guitar in high school talent shows. He performed such pieces as Van Halen’s “Eruption” and Randy Rhoads “Revelation Mother Earth” solo. During his senior year he was offered his first teaching job at the same store that just three years earlier, he had bought his first guitar.
Some of Rusty’s early influences included: Rhoads, Malmsteen, Becker, Gilbert, Holdsworth, Paganini, Bach, Vai, Gambale, Moore, MacAlpine, Taffolla, Friedman, Howe, Kotzen, Firkins, and Housholder. He was also influenced by many styles including: Jazz, Classical, Funk, Blues and even Country if you can believe that. There where times when Rusty was pulled in so many different directions by music, he didn’t know if he wanted to be a Classical Conductor or a Jazz guitarist.
After graduating High School, Rusty continued studying Music Theory at the local college, as well as Music History and Class Piano. In 1989, Rusty joined local rock band Revolution. Revolution wrote, performed and recorded all original music. They became one of Houston’s top drawing bands. Revolution opened for national acts like Badlands, Nitro, Every Mothers Nightmare, and South Gang. In 1992, Revolution released a four-song EP. Revolution’s music was once described as Skid Row meets Yngwie Malmsteen. Revolution made two appearances on a local TV show called “Metallurgy” and “Metallurgy Unplugged”. Rusty also taught guitar on a college TV show called “Stay Tuned”. In 1993, Rusty quit the band due to musical differences and started a new band Dominion. Dominion wrote and performed locally as well but was short lived and broke up in 1995. Also during 1995 Rusty entered and won the “Guitar Master Series” winning the title of “Best Guitarist” in Houston.
1996 marked the beginning of a new direction. Rusty bought his first 7-string guitar and decided it was time to go for it on his own. Rusty went back to the woodshed and started working on his guitar playing intensely pushing himself to new levels. Along with this came a whole new list of influences that fueled the fire….Shawn Lane, Derek Taylor, Buckethead, Todd Duane, Scott Stine and Haji’s Kitchen. It was during this period that Rusty began to work on instrumental guitar compositions. These songs represented his desire to record an over-the-top guitar instrumental release featuring state of the art chops and strong melodic content. Rusty was also selected as a runner up in the AIM "Jason Becker Scholarship Search." Rusty hosted three episodes of a local cable show called "World Class Guitar Techniques," which aired in the Houston area. Rusty taught for the National Guitar Summer Workshop in 96, 97, 98 at the Austin and Connecticut Campuses ...

The public thinks so too - Johnny A.'s latest works have sold many thousands of copies as well as being his personal best. As a bright-eyed six-year old in Malden, Massachusetts, Johnny became fascinated with the drums, a habit his father encouraged by buying him a kit. There were lessons and the Jr. High School marching band, but as fun as the skins were, he realized that their melodic capability was quite limited. Rhythm had taken a backseat to melody and since the most melodic instrument in any 60's beat group was guitar, those six-strings now began their inexorable pull on Johnny A's life. Once the four “mop-tops” from Liverpool dropped like a bomb from Ed Sullivan's studio into his living room in 1964, his course was set.
A $49 Lafayette Electronics guitar became Johnny A.'s first girlfriend. A humble beginning for sure, but his mom was no fool and wanted to be safe if this ‘guitar thing' just turned out to be another passing teenage phase. It wasn't. Johnny saw the Beatles at Suffolk Downs outside of Boston in 1966 and their magical presence sent the impressionable lad into a blur of activity – sweeping up hair and doing odd jobs at his aunt's salon to save up the 88 bucks needed to buy a Vox Clubman guitar. Then, of course, he had to have a Gretsch too. No, this was no passing phase ...
