smoky joe
smoky joe
Description
Smoky joe:
a crude but genuine formant shifter, ie. makes voice big/small like a pitch shift, but keeps the same pitch. the only free formant shifter of any kind.

the technique i discovered that enables the formant shift can generate a lot of distortion, mainly on upwards shifts. to combat this, there is a 'smoothing' parameter and a low-pass filter before the pulse train (recognises zero crossings.) if you don't know what this means.. between the two, you should be able to get a fairly 'smooth' process (still little loops in silence and high frequencies like sibilance) but at the expense of hifi.. so ultimately more or less 'realaudio' quality audio, no mariah carey. mariah carey on a cellphone :p

however.. because of the glitch/loop artifacts, this vst has been praised for it's fsu capabilities ("this is great for drum loops") you can get some good performance out of it when shifting down, if you want to sound like jabba the hut - for shifting lower than the source, lower the 'skip' param (skips pulses, ie. at 2 only every other pulse, ie. better for 1 octave lower.. 4 pulses for 2 octaves lower..)

GSnap is an auto-tune effect. It can be used subtly to correct the pitch of a vocal, or, with more extreme settings, to create a robot-voice effect.

For GSnap to work effectively, the input signal should be monophonic, at a good level and reasonably noise-free. For example, a clean, mono vocal recording, without excessive noise or reverb. Effect plug-ins should be placed after GSnap in the signal chain.

GSnap starts off by detecting the pitch of the incoming audio. The Min Freq and Max Freq parameters help the pitch-detector by narrowing the range of frequencies it needs to consider. Also, the Gate parameter should be set so that the pitch-detector ignores background noise during "silent" passages.

The Speed parameter sets the number of wave repetitions required for positive pitch-detection. Lower values for Speed will allow faster pitch-detection, but will increase the chance of false detection. The default value should be fine in most cases.

Once a pitch has been determined, GSnap applies the specified pitch-correction. There are two modes of pitch correction: fixed scale and MIDI. Fixed scale correction has a fixed set of snap-notes, while MIDI correction is controlled in real time by MIDI data.

The Threshold parameter sets the largest pitch-shift that will be applied to the input. It defines a region around each snap-note that will be corrected to that note. The GUI shows the snap-notes and regions in effect at any time.

The pitch-detection and correction can be made to use a different reference frequency using the Calibrate parameter. This sets the frequency of A above middle C.

Additionally, GSnap will respond to pitch-bend and modulation MIDI messages to apply pitch-bend and vibrato. The Pitch Bend, Vibrato and Vib Speed parameters control these effects.

Parameters
Min Freq: The minimum frequency that the pitch-detector will look for.

Max Freq: The maximum frequency that the pitch-detector will look for.

Gate: The minimum input peak level required to trigger the pitch-detector.

Speed: The number of wave cycles required for a positive match.

Correction Mode: Fixed scale or MIDI controlled.

Threshold: Defines the snapping region around each snap-note.

Amount: The amount of correction applied.

Attack: The time taken to reach full correction.

Release: The time taken to return to normal after correction has finished.

Pitch Bend: The maximum pitch-change caused by the pitch-bend wheel.

Vibrato: The maximum range of the vibrato triggered by the modulation wheel.

Vib Speed: The speed of the vibrato.

Calibrate: The frequency of A above middle C used for pitch detection and correction.

Notes On/Off: In fixed scale mode, the keyboard notes can be switched on or off, indicating whether they should or should not be considered as snap-notes.

Pitchworx DX:
The plug-in allow you adjust sample Pitch (while preserving sample length), Tempo (change sample length but preserve pitch) or change both Pitch and Tempo using post process high quality resampler (Speed) without preserving pitch and sample length.

Input parameters are: Pitch in semitones (cents) in range ± 4 octaves, Tempo in percents (in range 15..999 %), BPM or sample time in seconds, Speed in percents or semitones. For precise Tempo change and avoid artifacts an accuracy parameter is available. All parameters have two tweak modes: draft, where you able tweak parameters fast using GUI wheels and precise (calculator) mode, where you input precise values into edit boxes.

VSpectShift: basic spectrum shifter - you can shift the frequency bins inside an FFT buffer. (Note! the frequency shift is linear - whacky effects result - logarithmic would be more musical).
