As a recording engineer, on more than a few occasions, I have been reminded of this subjectivity in some very amusing ways. For instance, one evening, after a full day of mixing, I was invited to visit some friends in the Hollywood Hills, on the way home. Just stop by and say hello. Churches have one of two types of sound systems. One type of system competes with a room —undermining the worship service. Feedback, deadspots, distortion and poor intelligibility are unwanted sound effects that church audiences shouldn't be assaulted with. These systems are designed and installed with good intentions and there are many variations of them.
The other type of sound system is one that compliments the room and there are many variations of them too. However, when a church has room problems, no sound system can function beyond the performance of the worship space. Sadly, many churches are replacing well designed sound systems with the latest and greatest technology in hopes the next sound system will be better - only to be disappointed after the novelty wears out ...

OLSON SOUND DESIGN was organized in 1991. The consulting staff, led by principal consultant Bruce C. Olson, provides consultation in sound system design, combined audio & video production/presentation system design and technical systems design to support them. Bruce also provides training for EASE and advanced technical support for EASE users in the Western Hemisphere.
In its first decade the firm has completed or has underway projects in a half dozen states. The undertakings range from the renovation of the Guthrie Theatre to the design of a recording system for the Managed Care School at UHC — from the sound design in highly reverberant cathedrals such as at Saint John's University in Collegeville, MN., to the design of audio and video production facilities for 3M. We have been involved with numerous historical renovations, which like the sanctuaries for the First Baptist Church of Amarillo,TX, or the Air Force Academy Chapel, have meant integrating the technical systems into the architecture in a way that does not detract from the beauty of these spaces. In each case, careful attention to detail, respect for budgets and schedules, and an unswerving commitment to providing the very best and most informed technical advice are our standards.
The overwhelming majority of our current clients are people with whom we have worked before. We take inordinate care in maintaining contact with our clients, even long after the project is officially complete.
For all our projects our broad background and first-hand experience in the performing arts has allowed us to make flexible and creative contributions to the design team that are free of academic orthodoxy and wholly sympathetic to the practicalities of building design and the ongoing needs of performers and other users.
