The Guitars of Jeffrey R. Elliott:
My instruments are based on the Torres/Hauser tradition in design, and are tailored to the individual. Aesthetics are important to me and are also addressed individually.
I consider the match between player and instrument a crucial relationship, and will work with the customer to achieve an instrument that is well suited musically, physically, and aesthetically. I also consider certain characteristics essential in all my guitars: sufficient power, volume, and projection for the large hall; a broad spectrum of dynamic responses, with a variety of colors, tones, and textures; crystalline clarity with good sustain; and evenness and balance throughout with good, clear separation string to string.
Jeffrey R. Elliott was born in Chicago, Illinois and grew up in Detroit, Michigan. He began playing guitar at age sixteen and immediately fell in love with the sound of the classical guitar. This led to performing folk music professionally while majoring in Fine Arts at Michigan State University. In 1964, a chance visit to Richard Schneider's workshop in Detroit opened the door to the world of lutherie, and two years later he began a six-year apprenticeship with Schneider. In 1973 he moved to Portland, Oregon where he now resides with fellow luthier, Cyndy Burton ...

Jaros Guitars is the father and son team of Harry and Jim Jaros of Rochester, Pennsylvania. When the senior Jaros retired from his job as a machine repairman for Westinghouse in 1987, he was finally able to give full attention to his lifelong avocation of woodworking. "I've been playing around with wood since I was a child," says the 80-year old craftsman. "I took industrial arts in junior high school and was hooked from then on. I served in the Air Force through World War II. Soon after getting out in 1948, I went to work for Westinghouse, starting out in their box factory making crates. I was about 24 years old. Like Jim with the guitars, I was always making something in my spare time, too. Nothing big, but I always built my own stuff. I built kitchen cabinets as a side job for a number of years, but eventually the pre-fabricated stuff became too much competition, so I quit."

We asked Mary Jaros how her husband liked this new kind of woodworking compared to the cabinet work he'd been doing for years: "I'd say he loves it," said Mary, "he really enjoys it. Oh, sometimes, they have to hurry too much and it sort of takes a little of the fun out of it for him, but it comes with the job, I guess. He gets over it, because people like their guitars so much." Harry was brought out of his "retirement" in the winter of 1995. At his son Jim's urging, he agreed to give guitar-making a try--if Jim would join him and develop his woodworking skills, too. Soon the two men were producing a veritable line of professional-quality guitars as fast as they could find enough curly and spalted maple for the highly-figured tops.

"Actually," said Jim, "Dad had wanted a project we could work on together, and since I'm a guitar player, it seemed that building a guitar was a natural. Dad never makes just one of anything, though, so we built four guitars right from the start. Thanks to him, even those first guitars were good. Only a year later, the summer of '96, we were displaying at our first N.A.M.M. (National Association of Musical Merchants) show in Nashville, Tennessee. That's where we met Pam Webster and a bunch of the Stew-Mac crew (Pam's a member of the Stew-Mac purchasing department). We've also gone to a number of vintage shows, such as Arlington, the Fall Philadelphia show, and the Columbus Guitar Show. Now I wish I'd done more woodworking as a kid, because although I grew up around a woodshop, I'll never be as good as my dad. He knows things I never will" ...

Custom Barker Vertical upright Bass with premium woods and passive electronics- Play It Straight.
Barker Vertical Bass - New patent pending by Barker Musical Instruments.

Playing bass in two groups means at least five hours of playing per week. I'm thankful I have that opportunity.
But in the summer of 2002 my wrists began to hurt after only an hour or so of playing. Noting the bent aspect of both wrists as I played my horizontal bass, I began to imagine an upright fretted bass and how my hand positions would be different as I played it.
I couldn't find such an instrument to suit me, so I built one.
Itís called "The Secretary" because I had a little nameplate in a drawer in the shop. And the nameplate fit perfectly on the headstock from the "donor bass".
It was a fun project. People noticed the instrument and commented. I noticed my wrists--they were no longer telling me I should give up bass playing.
After fellow musicians repeatedly told me how good "The Secretary" sounded, I made another instrument...and another....and each sounded better than the last.
Even the first serial numbered BVBs vary from one to the next as the inveterate tinkerer in me has fiddled with components, varied pickup layout and tried different wood and core combinations, always seeking perfection in sound, playability and feel. By the time #30 was built I was content with evenness of tone, the low end growl, and the overall playability of the Barker Bass.
Prior to founding the eponymous instrument company, I owned and operated Great Ned! Woodworks for 22 years. As a custom woodworker and commercial cabinetmaker I enjoyed a reputation as a careful craftsman, a creative problem solver and a community minded businessman. And, in my off hours, bassplayer in the Dry Canyon Philharmonhick.
In that group as well as a local Praise Team, I Play It Straight with a Barker Bass ...
