steve pappas
steve pappas
Description
Steve Pappas is an expressive and adroit axe wielder currently based in Boardman, Ohio (USA) who represents his playing style as acoustic/fingerstyle/world, as a music fan can now experience on his most recent recording, "Refuge". His workhorse guitars consist of a Takamine EC132 and an Asturias JM15. Pappas has been playing guitar since 1974, and putting it simply, divulges his career objective, "To continue to write, and record my own compositions/arrangements for fingerstyle guitar."
When asked to finally make public his favorite or most used effect for the guitar, Pappas unflinchingly stated, "Digital reverb," and continued by outlining his musicial goals, "I want to express my emotions and experiences through each piece." He maintains a desire to, at some point, study historical instruments such as the lute, and is at the moment listening to Stevan Pasero, David Qualey and Gene Bertoncini. His principal gratification? "When a listener tells me that they wish my music would never stop playing," he explains absolutely ...

Innovative acoustic guitar virtuoso Leo Kottke was born September 11, 1945 in Athens, Georgia. Raised in 12 different states, he absorbed a variety of musical influences as a child, flirting with both violin and trombone before trying his hand at the guitar at age 11. After developing a love for the country-blues of Mississippi John Hurt, Kottke lost much of the hearing in his left ear as a result of a mishap with a firecracker; during a later tenure in the Naval Reserve, his right ear suffered permanent damage during firing practice.

Discharged due to his impairment, Kottke entered college, dropping out after several years to hitchhike across the country as an itinerant musician. After settling in the Twin Cities area and becoming a fixture on the city's folk club circuit, he issued his 1969 debut LP Twelve String Blues, recorded live at Minneapolis' Scholar Coffee House, on the tiny Oblivion label. After sending 1970's Circle 'Round the Sun to guitarist John Fahey, Kottke was signed by Fahey's manager Denny Bruce, who soon secured a deal with Capitol ...

After Neil Young left the Californian folk-rock band Buffalo Springfield in 1968, he slowly established himself as one of the most influential and idiosyncratic singer/songwriters of his generation. Young's body of work ranks second only to Bob Dylan in terms of depth, and he was able to sustain his critical reputation, as well as record sales, for a longer period of time than Dylan, partially because of his willfully perverse work ethic. From the beginning of his solo career in the late '60s until the late '90s, he never stopped writing, recording, and performing; his official catalog only represented a portion of his work, since he kept countless tapes of unreleased songs in his vaults. Just as importantly, Young continually explored new musical territory, from rockabilly and the blues to electronic music. But these stylistic exercises only gained depth when compared to his two primary styles: gentle folk and country-rock, and crushingly loud electric guitar rock, which he frequently recorded with the Californian garage band Crazy Horse. Throughout his career, Young alternated between these two extremes, and both proved equally influential; there were just as many simpy singer/songwriters as there were grunge and country-rock bands claiming to be influenced by Neil Young. Despite his enormous catalog and influence, Young continued to move forward, writing new songs and exploring new music in his fourth decade as a performing artist. That restless spirit ensured that he was one of the few rock veterans as vital in his old age as he was in his youth ...

Royce campbell: guitarist, producer, composer:
It was apparent at an early age that Indiana native Royce Campbell was destined to be a world traveler. When he was four years old Royce's mother remarried a career navy man and Royce spent his childhood residing in such diverse locales as Japan, Barbados, Spain, Philadelphia and South Carolina. Although Royce had played guitar since age nine, he didn't become serious about music until age 15 when he became interested in blues and blues rock guitarists such as Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix. By the time Royce finished high school, he was certain he wanted to pursue a career in music, but he didn't have the means to go to music school. Fortunately, his uncle Carroll DeCamp, a renowned arranger/pianist/guitarist, invited Royce to live with him and study.

Soon Royce's reputation as a quality musician spread, and in 1973 he was asked to tour with vocalist Marvin Gaye. Two years later, Royce was hired by a local music contractor to do three concerts with Henry Mancini in Indianapolis. Mancini was so impressed by Royce's abilities that he asked him to become his regular touring guitarist. Royce would remain with Mancini for 19 years until Mancini's death in 1994. That Mancini was indeed a good mentor to Royce is obvious not only in his style but also in his prolific CD output.

Royce's first CD, Nighttime Daydreams, was released in 1990 on the Dutch label Timeless Records. Since then Royce has released a total of fourteen CD's as leader or co leader (see discography). He has also appeared on over thirty recordings as a sideman.

Since the Japanese label Paddlewheel released Project G 5, A Tribute to Wes Montgomery in 1993, Royce has repeatedly produced CD's which feature him in the company of many of the greats of the jazz guitar, including legendary guitarists Herb Ellis, Tal Farlow, Jimmy Raney, and Cal Collins, Pat Martino, John Abercrombie, Larry Coryell, Dave Stryker and Bucky Pizzarelli. His latest project for Paddlewheel, Project G-5, A Tribute to Joe Pass, includes Charlie Byrd, Gene Bertoncini, Mundel Lowe, and John Pisano ...

You may know Steve from The Sopranos (he plays Silvio Dante) or as the longtime guitarist from Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band. Now you can get to know him as the coolest DJ in the country, a proud throwback to the late-night hipster jocks of long-gone 1960s and ‘70s FM radio.
