Classical Guitars by Steve Ganz, Builder.
I was born (whew!) and grew up in Southern California, in the Mar Vista/Venice area. I began playing guitar before I was a teenager. A friend of mine showed me a few chords and I was hooked. I had played the trombone in orchestra school for several years prior to guitar and I loved the intimacy of the little stringed instrument. Until somebody told me about Segovia, I had no knowledge that the guitar could play classical music. I fell further in love listening to Segovia and Bream. The sounds of guitar are etched into my being.
During my teens I had another passion, (aside from girls and sports) which led me to working with wood: Bellyboarding. I began making paipo boards. Paipo boards are small wooden surf boards that predate today’s boogie boards. They were hydro-dynamically shaped, with integral hand holds and skegs. I don’t think anybody rides those anymore. Just like nobody rides balsawood longboards.
At the age of 19, I built my first classical guitar with John Roberts in Arizona. I am mostly self-taught, but I have been helped and influenced by other Bellingham luthiers, John Rollins and Dake Traphagen. I have been a member of the Guild of American Lutherie since 1994 and have been influenced quite a bit by the many acquaintances I have made at GAL (Guild of American Luthiers) conventions. (I’d like to go into details here in the future…)
