I got started in building hammered dulcimers as an intersection of my desire to own one and the fact that I choked on the thought of spending $500-$600 for a decent instrument. I designed the instrument above using a variety of sources and my trusty Mac. The result is a 15/14 (that's 15 treble courses and 14 bass courses) instrument with a laminated (fancy term for plywood) back and top. The top is luan plywood which is slightly less than 1/4" in thickness and the back is 1/2" nominal nine ply poplar. The keels (top and bottom of the trapezoidal frame) are made of figured 'soft' maple and the pinblocks are made of sugar maple, also known as rock maple. The top has a cherry stain on it. I didn't keep close track but I figure the instrument took me about 60 hours to construct. Uh.. lessee, that was probably about 6 hours of construction and 54 hours of tuning ...

Chuck's Chimes.
How to build and tune tubular wind chimes.
On this page I present what I think is the best information one will find on tubular wind chimes. Many years ago I started searching the web for information to build my own chimes. After finding a little bit of information I tried to build a set of chimes using copper tubing. Mostly they made noise but they sure didn't compare to expensive commercial chimes. A few years later I decided to give it another try. This time I found an equation to help me determine the length of a chime. I had not seen this equation before and being an engineer I set out on my current quest for more knowledge. On this page I present the information needed to make chimes that I think will be as good as or better than any of the expensive commercial chimes....

building a banjo, by john fisher (jon tirone).
As in the past with several others things that I have built, I had very little info on how to build this banjo. Here in Mexico, they simply do not exist so I have not been able to study one in order to help me build it. I ordered some parts form Stewart McDonald but I had a bit of a hard time just figuring out how to put it together as there were some physical aspects that I had no idea about. I started looking on the web at numerous sites just to see how they were made and to get other vital clues on the function of different parts ...

A procedure for correcting warped, broken, bent, stripped concertina endscrews.

Homewood Musical Instrument Company Birmingham, Alabama.
Endplate screws on antique concertinas can frequently fail. This often results in air leaks that contribute to poor performance in the instrument. End screws are usually steel and should last the life of the instrument, but years of abuse by well meaning players with bad screwdrivers and overzealous tightening can ruin screw heads, strip the small brass endbolts hiding beneath the chamois lining on the bellows frame or break the screw off inside the concertina....
