The award winning Eddie Reed Swing Band is featured nationally on the PBS television network and Entertainment Tonight.
With the profusion of lounge, rockabilly, and jump bands, The Eddie Reed Big Band represents a true link to the swing era proper. Having played with Artie Shaw, Anita O'Day, Helen Forrest, Abe Most, and The Inkspots, Reed's devotion to authenticity and to the recreation of the true swing bands of the 1930s and 1940s pervades every aspect of his performance. According to Reed, "1939 was the year when jazz was really at its best. Before that, the sound was too tight; after, it was too deep. It was important to me when I started the band to have this sound. I don't mind admitting that I modeled my band after my heroes and use a lot of their music."
The Eddie Reed Big Band has recently released their debut CD, entitled Hollywood Jump. Recorded at the historical Capital Records studios, it is a precocious and authentic endeavor representing a cross-section of swing and jazz standards. Contents include: "Salt Lake City Blues" (arranged for Johnny Mercer by Will Hudson), "Jazznocracy" (arranged for Jimmie Lunceford by Will Hudson), Duke Ellington's "Cottontail," Gene Krupa's "Boogie BLues," and the Yiddish folk song "Bei Mir Bist Du Schön." Artie Shaw standards "Natch" and "The Lamp is Low" also appear, the arrangements for which Shaw contributed from his personal library.

"The Esquire story is amazing, but it happened. In 1958, four fourteen year old teenagers asked me to help them form a dance band like Glenn Miller. Rather than discuss this crazy idea, I told them to go out and recruit 5 saxes, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, a bass, drums, a guitar and a piano. One of them said, 'OK.' and they left. I never planned on seeing them again.
"About a month later, they informed me that they were ready to rehearse. My mind went immediately to, 'What about music, stands, chairs, a place to practice, and all the needs for a 17 piece dance band?'. My rumpus room became the rehearsal place and I worked with them for over two years with little result. I suggested that we forget the whole idea and one young man stood up and said bluntly, 'You promised to help us'.
"I asked then to take the music home and practice in sections, with the saxes alone, trumpets alone, etc., in order to make more progress. If they didn't learn the music by the next rehearsal, I would dismiss them early. This worked and the band seemed to be eager to work harder and I felt some hope ...
