the hand forged metal spinning tools
the hand forged metal spinning tools
Description
Forging of Metal Spinning Tools of
James P. Riser.

The majority of the metal spinning tools in my collection were made somewhere between 1900 and 1920. To the best of my knowledge Delta, Boice-Crane, Powermatic, and Yates-American were the last known manufacturers of quality traditional style metal spinning tools. None of these companies seems to have continued making them after the 1960's. In the late 1990's the Sorby company of England introduced a selection of light weight spinning tools which were not really heavy enough for most serious spinning work.

To fill this void, I decided to manufacture my own line of hand forged and hardened metal spinning tools. These tools have been designed based upon many of the ancient traditional tools in my collection and based upon my own experiences spinning metal. Below I shall briefly demonstrate the method of manufacturing these tools....

Macassar Ebony OM 12 Fret Guitar.
I've been playing the guitar for more than 30 years (an eternal intermediate!). Last year I build my first acoustic guitar. I've recently started on my second guitar, armed with a lot of knowledge of what (and what NOT) to do this time around. I would like to share my experience with you. This page contains some pictures and descriptions of my second guitar as I am building it. The guitar is a 12 fret OM style acoustic. I made the back and sides out of Macassar Ebony and the top is Engelman Spruce. The binding is Bloodwood (more on this later). You can read my brief descriptions and view the pictures by following the appropriate link. I am not showing the whole building process, just some things that I have done that may be a little different than normal ...

Eastman Strings, Modern Instruments, Old-fashioned Quality.
Eastman Strings is widely recognized as a leading maker and distributor of fine stringed instruments and bows ranging from fractional size instruments for young beginners to outstanding master instruments and bows for advanced and professional players. Over the years, we have striven to supply musicians with the best possible quality at reasonable prices.

The wide variety of instruments available from Eastman Strings includes Chinese, German, and Eastern European lines. All are distinguished by their quality materials and expert craftsmanship.

Instruments by Eastman Strings are crafted using traditional methods and materials. Aged tonewoods and quality hardwood fittings are fashioned by hand by talented craftspeople under the guidance of master luthiers in precisely the same manner as the famous German and French workshops made them a century ago.

Our German instruments are constructed in the traditional cottage industry style, with specialists collaborating to create instruments in the manner of the Mittenwald and Klingenthal workshops of the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. Final adjustments, graduations, and finishing are completed in our USA workshops.

Bows provided by Eastman Strings are made by hand in small master workshops using traditional Permnambuco and Brazilwood sticks and ebony frogs with authentic nickel, silver, and mother-of-pearl fittings. In addition, Our K.Holtz and Cadenza bows employ modern materials to achieve age-old standards of weight, strength, and suppleness. Eastman Strings donates a percentage of the proceeds from ALL bow sales to the important conservation efforts of the International Pernabuco Conservation Initiative.

Each item Eastman Strings makes and sells has its own story to tell, yet all share one important aspect: they are created with integrity by people who care about your music making.

I am particularly interested in the guitar of the early 19th century. The instruments described as "Romantic guitars" or "Biedermeier Gitarren" are of smaller shape. They comply with the acoustic aesthetics and musical demands of this period.
The presented photos on this page are reproductions of instruments by the most famous guitarmakers of the time:
Stauffer, Lacote and Panormo. Models of other guitars, terz-guitars, more string-guitars etc. are at my disposal either with drawn up formes or construction plans.
For detailed information please contact me.
Prices between € 3000.- and € 4500.- depending on model and design.
Apart from conventional standard and reconditioning repairs I also carry out extensive restoration in my workshop. In most cases the aim of restauration is a playable instrument for musicians. Depending on condition and rarity of the instrument a pure conservative work may be more important. This decision must be made with the owner before restoration. I see conservative work as making each step of the restoration reversible. Therefore it is of utmost importance to use only soluble glutin-glues which have been used traditionally for centuries by violin makers.Another priority is the preservation of all parts of the instrument in its complete substance including the varnish. The replacement of complete parts in case of destruction or worm damage is always the last and very worst choice of possibilities.

Due to the revival of classic and early romantic literature in connection with performance practize the instruments of this period meet with increasing interest. Besides famous names as Lacote and Stauffer you can find quite a few "second best" makers who built excellent instruments on a very high standard of acoustics and craftsmanship.

During the last 15 years I have restored a considerable number of instruments for customers worldwide. They are beeing used for concert performance or CD-recordings ...

JAMEEL ABRAHAM'S OUD MAKING JOURNAL.
In January 2002 I received an Oud as a gift. This was a Turkish oud made by Cankaya Music in Istanbul, Turkey. It was modified for better sound and playability by oud maker Najib Shaheen. A few weeks after I received it, and after the urging of a few individuals, I considered the idea of building my own. Being quite frugal I thought that I could make my own oud and save some money if I ever wanted to buy another one. With some measurements and initial advise provided by Najib Shaheen, I decided to begin the oud. I have several years of woodcarving and woodworking experience, so I wasn't new to the subject. However, I consider instrument making to be the most refined form of woodworking, and I knew that I had much to learn, mostly patience. I decided early on that I did not care when I finished it. Shortly after I began the project I joined an on-line oud forum. I discovered from this source a man who makes ouds based on those of the early 20th century luthier Hanna Nahat of Damascus. (Nahat ouds are highly regarded, rare and very valuable. Many professional oud players use Nahat ouds, among them Simon Shaheen.) He published a book detailing the construction of an oud based on the Nahat design ...
