The "Mark King" basses:
Maybe not the worlds most famous bassplayer, but certainly in Europe the most influencial bassplayer , combining percussive slaptechniques in regular 4/4 popsongs which reached the top in many Top 40 hitlists. From 1980 to now Level42 (and from 1998 frontman Mark King solo) defined a streak of hits that were built upon the knowledge of instrumentalists, making this very clear in live performances where the jazzfunk background was always very prominent. Mark King made the bassguitar highly fashionable in the 80's , combining melodic pieces with a rapid slapstyle. Uptil then these kind of solos could only be found in jazzrock and such, and not even so heavily slapped as the "thing" Mark got fame with. It became his trademark and although he has tried to get rid of this image by making more "songwriter-like" music it will probably hunt him for the rest of his life. How he feels about it only he knows, but it's for sure he still has a large following for this basstechnique, which gives the bass the most prominent and forceful spot on stage (and not overdone as witnessed today with many frantic and illsounding tapsolos by bass- solo- guitarists) ...

Gregory Furan, Lutherie:
I build guitars that range from my concert quality classical (the C-49) to a number of performance acoustic steel-string guitars. My steel-string guitars range from a wide body (not quite jumbo) Signature model, to a very narrow body parlour guitar (also available in a classical nylon string version). In between is my L-49, a powerful OO style and the S-45, a small body guitar with exceptional volume. My P-49 is a concert model steel-string with the same body outline of my classical C-49. The D-49, a dreadnought with big sound, rounds out my present model listing.
I prefer the qualities of Engleman Spruce or Western Red Cedar in my classical guitars and Sitka Spruce in my steel-string guitars, but there are other options which will yield impressive results.
I do not feel limited by tradition here. Personally, I love Rosewood, but many other hardwoods will yield truly professional instruments and I will not shy away from highly figured hardwoods if they are acoustically sound and stable. I have been collecting seasoned hardwood for many years now, and can offer more than twenty-five different species. A list of available wood options can be found in my "woodbin".
