The New Orleans Klezmer All-Stars (NOKAS) have carried on with their own interpretation of the klezmer tradition since 1991. New Orleans, where arcane cultural borrowing is normal, seems to be a natural home for a music that has always blended diverse styles. Yet, "when we first started playing this music, people had no idea what it was (many still don't)," explains Arthur Kastler, the band's original bass player, "They would stand there with their jaws open.... But right away, they danced."

Steel City Klezmorim: The word Klezmer comes from two Hebrew words. Klay, which means "vessel of" - and Zemer, meaning "song". It's a Yiddish word for musical instrument and is used to describe the dance music of Eastern European, Ashkenazi Jews. It's also a term for the musicians who play it.

We are a four-piece ensemble: violin, clarinet, guitar/mandolin and bass. Kandels: Bandet bildades hösten 1997 och vi firar tio års jubileum nästa år. Vi förenades i klezmermusiken, denna musik fylld av känslor. Musiken spelades på krogarna i Odessa långt innan begrepp som punk och blues var uppfunna. Vi blir äldre, men vår musik känns bara fräschare för varje år. De senaste åren har repertoaren utökats med låtar från balkan med tydliga zigenska influenser.
Kandels samarbetat med olika slagverkare vilket bidragit till att vi nu står ännu stadigare med en fot i den judiska traditionen och en i den balkan-zigenska.
