Description
Tom Strahle:
Los Angeles Studio Guitarist & Songwriter.
I've been writing songs for over twenty years (if you don't count the book of Beatlesque tunes I wrote when I was seven). But it wasn't until I started leading worship in 1996 that I began to develop a desire to write worship songs. I've always enjoyed writing. I almost consider it as necessary to my well being as breathing. I feel that there is a part of my heart and/or mind that is exposed with each song. In the case of the songs I've written for Porch this is definitely true. In the case of the praise and worship songs I've written I hope to be as invisible as possible as I write about or to our Lord and Savior. I believe that we were created for one primary purpose and that is to worship our God. He doesn't even need us to witness for Him (although I believe that is a vital part of a Christian walk) His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature are clearly seen in His creation ...so that they are without excuse (Romans 1:19,20).The songs below were written for God's glorification and the Church's edification ...

Christopher Teti:
Born and raised in PA. Enjoyed singing as a child and was interested in the drums, but did not seriously start studying music until the age of 14. After buying a guitar, I immediately began private lessons with Ron Shank (instructor at "Beam's Music School" in PA). After 9 months of studying with him, I became more and more serious, and started practicing up to 12 hours a day. A few months after that, he told me that there was nothing else he could teach me, and I was declared his "best student ever" out of his 1000+ students and his 30+ years of teaching... Which is something that he loves to tell people about whenever I'm around (his positive attitude and supportive nature had a lot to do with my development as a guitarist). I now teach Ron when I am in PA.
After my lessons with Ron ended, I began a period of independant study and started giving private lessons. That continued for a couple years. Then I took a personal break from music (although I continued to teach), and began a period of reading hundreds of books on anything that I thought might help me gain an understanding about the nature of existence ...

guitar tips: The Capricious Caddis

This study is one that I use frequently as a warm-up exercise. It is also included in the soon to be released book from Mel Bay publications entitled Getting into Fingerstyle Guitar. This study is called "The Capricious Caddis." A caddis is a water bug, and because this piece uses slurs it reminded me of the erratic or "capricious" movements of a water bug. The entire piece is based on slurs, which are also known as "hammer-on’s" and "pull-off’s." In order to properly execute slurs and other challenging fingerings, it is very important to keep your fingers and left hand in the optimal position.

In addition to slurs, there are many instances in fingerstyle pieces in which the player must achieve long stretches or unorthodox hand positions in order to achieve the desired harmony. These hand positions are much easier to achieve if the correct "hand posture" is adhered to. Let’s look at some of the main points of correct "hand posture". These points describe the "general" or "home base" hand position. Of course your hand position changes angles throughout the performance of a piece, but this is the basic position ...

Welcome to the official website of the Robert Cray Band!
The Robert Cray Band set to extend milestone of 1,000th live performances as a unit with extensive worldwide touring

LOS ANGELES – The Robert Cray Band kicked off 2005 by completing their new CD, Twenty, and by notching their 1000th gig with the band's current lineup. The new album combines the band’s skills with legendary, Grammy winning engineer Don Smith (The Rolling Stones, Ry Cooder, Miles Davis) to craft an intelligent and sophisticated CD that draws from a diverse pool of influences to create a signature sound and a varied menu of songs.

Twenty, like its predecessor Time Will Tell, was co-produced by Cray along with Jim Pugh, his keyboardist of 16 years. Set for May 24 street date, fans can look for U.S. tour dates throughout the balance of the year.

Cray gave several standout performances at Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar festival (recently aired on PBS and currently on DVD) with his own band and in an all star jam session with Clapton, Buddy Guy, Robert Randolph, Hubert Sumlin and Jimmie Vaughan. Also just released on DVD is the Martin Scorsese film, “Lightning In A Bottle,” featuring Robert in two segments including the final with Robert, B.B. King and Bonnie Raitt. His performances in the rock classic film, Hail Hail Rock and Roll are also just re-airing on cable.

Speaking of Twenty, Cray comments, “What I like most about the album is the variety of songs. We covered a lot of bases on the record – from a touch of jazz with ‘My Last Regret’ and ‘Two Steps From The End’ to ‘Does It Really Matter’ which has a rock feel to it. We have a straight-up blues thing with ‘It Doesn’t Show’ and the song ‘Poor Johnny’ even has an early reggae or ska kind of beat to it” ...

Sweeping Harmonic Chords: There are almost endless ways to play harmonics on the guitar. The basic concept is to play a string or strings while lightly touching exactly at a fraction of the string such as the halfway point (or 1/3 or 1/4 of the string length). Any manner that you can 1) touch the string exactly at that point and 2) activate the string on either side of that point (either by striking, plucking, bowing, or tapping on that point) will produce the harmonic ...
