Washburn’s 120 year history is steeped in the tradition of fine instrument making. Our products reflect the hard-working spirit of the Washburn employees who craft and design each guitar.

For over one hundred years, Washburn has built more than just great guitars, we've built a history. The Washburn tradition of craftsmanship and innovation has withstood the tests of brand competition, fashion and economics. Since our birth in Chicago in 1883, the name Washburn has been branded into the world's finest stringed instruments. If your interest in guitars borders on passion, you will settle for nothing less than a Washburn.
As proof of our distinguished place in guitar history, Washburn has been honored with the publication of a commemorative book: Washburn: 100 Years of Fine Stringed Instruments by John Teagle. Published by 20th Century Guitars and distributed by Music Sales Corporation, the book chronicles Washburn's varied and exciting legacy ...
Artinger:
I started experimenting with guitars at around age 12, and after apprenticing under local master-cabinetmaker, John Angelino, through high school, I emerged to start Artinger Custom Guitars in 1997 at age 19.
With the incredible support and trust of my first few clients (all of which have become close friends) word spread throughout the area, and eventually out of state. With demand steadily growing, I teamed up with Rick in 1999 to form Artinger Custom Guitars, LTD.
Although Rick spends only a small portion of his time in the shop helping with the construction of the instruments themselves, he's the administrative backbone of the company, handling everything from the website to our marketing. It's been a fantastic partnership, and we're both proud to be keeping the company to a grassroots level, getting to know each customer individually, and tailoring every instrument to that individual's needs and desires. Therefore, every Artinger is a unique and special adventure, and no two are identical ...
Richard Mermer Guitars:
Rich has been designing, building, and repairing fretted string instruments since 1983, after completing his studies at the Roberto-Venn School of Luthiery in Phoenix, Arizona. While attending the school, Rich was greatly influenced by master craftsman and instructor William Eaton (refer to Acoustic Guitar Magazine, N0.61, pp.64-67). It was from Bill, that Rich learned to let his creative juices flow, and not to worry about building "clones" of popular designs.
After leaving Roberto-Venn, Rich acquired additional experience while working for Fretted Instruments International (the parent company to Oscar Schmidt Autoharps and Washburn Guitars) and Philip Kubicki Guitar Technology of Santa Barbara, California.
Rich's shop is not geared towards mass production techniques, although jigs and tooling are certainly used to cut down on the time spent on the more tedious and repetitious steps in the construction process. Rich prefers to build from one to three instruments at a time, and usually completes from 12 - 16 instruments each year. These instruments are handcrafted works of art that are built to the specifications of the client. Rich does keep several instruments available as portfolio/demonstration pieces so that potential clients can experience the quality of his work.
Richs instruments have been featured in 'Guitar 2000: Today's State of the Art, Tomorrow's Innovations' (Acoustic Guitar Magazine, August 1998, Issue 68); and in 'The Holey Grail: Why Leading Guitar Makers Are Rethinking Traditional Soundhole Designs' (Acoustic Guitar Magazine, February 1999, Issue 74). Many artists are using Richs instruments in the studio and in live preformance, including Don Conoscenti, Cyril Pahinui, Brooks Williams, John Alevizakis, and Al Scortino ...

Rene Wilhelmy, Luthier:
René Wilhelmy studied classical guitar at the Institut Marguerite Bourgeois with guitarist Jean Vallières. During this training, he learned instrument making on his own, thus launching his career as a luthier. Two grants, one from the Canada Council and the other from the Office franco-québécois, enabled him to hone his skill, and his travels in Europe brought him into contact with major luthiers and guitarists. With his solid experience acquired over the years, Wilhelmy has become a prominent luthier.
While he works on historic guitar models, René Wilhelmy also experiments with building more modern instruments, such as folk guitars and electric guitars. To date, he has produced nearly one hundred instruments, including lutes, folk and electric guitars, and more than seventy-five classical guitars. These instruments, many of which are owned by award-winning musicians, are widely admired as much for their artistic beauty as for their fine tone.
